The City of Shelbyville’s redesign of Sixth Street is in the heart of the Historic District. The idea is to convert the street between Main and Washington streets into a pedestrian plaza with shops featuring dining, entertainment and retail.
The surface of the street will consist of a single level of paving stones and bricks between the facades of the historic buildings. Other features will include string lighting along the length of the block and sun blocking canvas coverings along part of the block. The design include “seat walls” at intervals along the plaza and improved lighting.
The intention is for the space to be a public area that will encourage people to enjoy dining, music, or just hanging out in a comfortable space away from vehicular traffic. The design will show off the eclectic historic buildings that face Sixth Street.
